The Innovator's Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care (Transcript) Description

In 1997, Clayton Christensen changed the way managers think about business innovation with his landmark book, The Innovator's Dilemma, in which he explained that innovative new products that transform entire markets typically do not emerge from the R&D labs of the leaders of those markets. Instead, those "disruptive innovations" usually start as cheap, stripped-down products launched by an upstart firm at the low end of the marketplace and then gradually replace the expensive, established product.

Now, in The Innovator's Prescription, Christensen applies the principles of disruptive innovation to the broken health care system with two pioneers in the field, Jerome Grossman, M.D. and Jason Hwang, M.D.

Christensen is Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He is also co-founder of Innosight, a management consultancy; Rose Park Advisors, an investment firm; and Innosight Institute, a non-profit think tank. He is the author or co-author of five books, including the bestsellers The Innovator's Dilemma and The Innovator's Solution. The late Dr. Grossman was the Director of the Harvard/Kennedy School Health Care Delivery Policy Program. Dr. Hwang is an internal medicine physician and senior strategist for the Healthcare Practice at Innosight LLC.

In this summary, we'll examine a range of symptoms and offer proven solutions that will improve health care and make it affordable. You'll discover how disruptive business models can improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of health care by changing the way hospitals and doctors work. And you'll learn how employers can change the role they play in health care to compete effectively in the era of globalization.
